| Summary: | Currently all four classes of Cross Country award the top two teams at the state meet with trophies and medals for the 6 runners on the championship and runner-up teams. This proposal would add a third place trophy and third place medals to the six runners of the team that finishes third place at the state Cross Country meet in all classes (A, B, C, and D).
All runners in the NSAA Cross Country Championships are eligible for individual honors. 1. Team trophies will be presented to teams placing first, second, and third in each class. 2. Medals will be presented to the competitors placing first through fifteenth in each class. 3. A "gold medal" will be presented to the individual having the best time in the meet regardless of class. 4. Championship team head coaches will receive awards. 5. Members of the championship team will receive team medals. 6. Members of the runner-up team will receive team medals. 7. Members of the 3rd place team will receive team medals. | |||
| Rationale: | Currently we award only two team trophies at the state Cross Country championships. The sport of Cross Country has changed a lot in the past few years. The popularity has grown and continues to grow. With the availability of training information, nutrition information, better coaching, and many other factors the sport continues to improve and become more and more competitive. There are more teams than ever before and more runners competing in the sport than ever before. Adding a 3rd place team trophy seems to be a logical step forward for the sport. Times that would traditionally leave a team in the top 2, receiving a trophy and medals, in the past are now rarely in the top 5 teams in each prospective class. There are other sports that are awarding trophies and medals to the top 3 teams also. | |||
| Pros: | This would also allow for a greater number of teams being recognized at the state level increasing pride and a sense of accomplishment in the sport. This can also increase the competition for teams not just in the top 2 teams in each class. | |||
| Cons: | This will change the awards ceremony at the state meet and also add to the cost of the NSAA to host the state meet. | |||
