| Summary: | This proposal is to change the start date for the winter season for basketball and wrestling. This will change the start of the winter sports season to the Monday of week 22 following the Thanksgiving holiday. Wrestling weight management can begin the Monday of week 20. The first date of competitions would be the Thursday of week 23 of the NSAA calendar. Playoffs (sub-districts, districts, district finals, and the State Tournaments) will remain the same dates and format. This also includes a moratorium between the fall and winter seasons. The 5-day moratorium will fall the week of Thanksgiving break from Wednesday through Sunday), or week 21 of the NSAA calendar. | |||
| Rationale: | The winter season is the longest season by calendar weeks of the 3 sports seasons. This is partially due to it falling over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. The boys basketball season currently spans 17 weeks, girls basketball spans 16 weeks, and boys and girls wrestling spans 14 weeks, swimming/diving is 15 weeks, bowling is 13 weeks. Comparatively, football is 15 ½ calendar weeks, girls golf and softball is 10 weeks, volleyball is 13 weeks, soccer and tennis are 11 weeks, baseball and track are 12 calendar weeks, and boys golf is 12 ½ weeks. This will also give the student/athletes time off between fall and winter seasons. | |||
| Pros: | Increases the time between fall and winter sports seasons. Creates a moratorium for students between fall and winter seasons. Decreases the calendar weeks of the winter season. Allows for more family time during the Thanksgiving holiday. | |||
| Cons: | The amount of possible game days reduces from 46 to 41 for GBB, from 49 to 44 BBB, from 46 to 41 for Wrestling. These numbers exclude Wednesday’s, Sundays, Dec 27, and Jan 1. It is calculated to the day that entries are due. It reduces the number of practice days prior to the first competition from 12 to 8 (excluding weekends). | |||
